Herbs for Health

Health, Happiness and Herbs

Health can be understood as a vital and dynamic equilibrium of body, mind and soul.  Medicinal plants and herbs are excellent tools that can help us maintain this intricate balance.  Their appropriateness to people from all cultures and backgrounds is universal and innate.

Not too many years ago it was a revolutionary suggestion to say that the mind and body were connected.  The use of medicinal plants and herbs were also marginalised.  Now cell biology, phytochemistry and neuroscience are all unveiling the intimate relationship between healthy cellular function, mental states and plant medicines.  That’s why at Happy High Herbs Nimbin our mission is to promote the appreciation, education, benefits, culture and freedom for all natural plants and herbs.  The more herbs we have available, the greater our capacity to reach optimum health and wellbeing, naturally.

Which Herb?
There are so many great herbs to choose from. One herb, like liquorice, can have so many medicinal applications that trying to classify it into one is impossible. Liquorice has almost 600 active phytochemicals in the root alone! But to make things simple at Happy High Herbs Nimbin we display our Herbs for Health in two broad categories ~ Supportive and Cleansing.

Supportive herbs optimise metabolic function for balance and vitality. Supportive herbs are strengthening, protective and nourishing, providing deep energy, or chi, to cells and organ systems. They can help us feel more alert and help us to relax, rejuvenate and sleep more deeply. Regular use of supportive herbs will keep you looking younger and more beautiful, feeling happier and more alive.

Our Support Herbs are defined into three subcategories:

Adaptogens .. Survive and Thrive!
Our favourite range of Herbs for Support are undoubtedly the adaptogens that help our bodies adapt to both internal or external stressors. These are plants with a rich variety of phytochemicals. They include Ginseng (panax ginseng), Ashwaganda (withania somnifera), Shatavari (asparagus racemosus) and Liquorice (glycyrrhiza glabra). Certain medicinal mushrooms, such as Reishi (ganoderma lucidum), are also classed as adaptogenic.

“Since I discovered adaptogens my life has transformed. I just don’t get burned-out anymore. I can achieve more, relax better and still get everything done. I feel happy and healthy most of the time”

Cognitive Function and Cellular Oxygenation
With support herbs cognitive function our memory, intellect and mental resilience can all be improved. There are many excellent studies on the role of plants in optimising brain function.

Herbs such as Suma (pfaffia paniculata) and Herb Robert (geranium robertianum) can facilitate cellular oxygenation. When used in conjunction with peripheral vasodilators like Ginkgo (ginkgo biloba) and Gotu Kola (centella asiatica), oxygen transportation to the cell can be maximised, in particular at the peripheral parts of the body. Blood and oxygen flows more freely into the brain, hands and feet (as well as to other protruding parts).

Relax with Nerve Tonics..
Supportive herbs can help us to relax and sleep more deeply. When we constantly struggle with stress and anxiety the cells of the body become overwhelmed by the fight to survive and the normal processes of health and healing cannot function efficiently. Tranquillising herbs, commonly called ‘nervines’ or ‘nerve tonics’, include passionflower, skullcap, catnip, valerian and chamomile. Make a nerve tonic tea~  relax and enjoy at any time of day.

“When we regularly use supportive and cleansing herbs we discover radiant inner health. Our eyes shine, our skin glows and we find an inner balance that sustains our creative flow in life ”.
Elen Jones

Cleansing herbs can help us eliminate excess mucus, toxins and metabolic byproducts from the body. Cleansing herbs help us deal with the excesses and hectic lifestyles of the twenty first century at the cellular level. Integrating gently cleansing herbs into everyday life means that you can get away longer with all your bad habits… with less painful results 🙂

Our Cleansing Herbs are defined in three subcategories:

Love your Liver..
The liver is the chemical powerhouse of the body, processing and metabolising all the foods, hormones and chemicals in the blood. Liver detox herbs like Burdock and Dandelion can help balance overindulgence. They can also help to gently cleanse residues from ingested chemicals like pesticides, pharmaceuticals and recreational drugs. Liver detox herbs can also useful in cases of blocked anger and resentment, or when life just isn’t flowing quite as we’d like.

Healthy Blood..
Blood is the medium that surrounds all the cells in the body. Healthy blood rich with nutrients and free from toxins is the ultimate cell food!  Blood purification herbs, like Nettle or Pau D’arco, can help when there are skin disorders, low immunity, debilitation or joint pain. By gently supporting organ function in the liver and kidneys these herbs also help to eliminate acids and wastes from the body more effectively.

Digestion and Bowel…
Healthy guts feel good! Herb teas require no digestion in the stomach, thus delivering their healing compounds directly without the need for an energy-sapping digestive process. Bitter tonics get the gall bladder squirting. There are thousands of receptors on the tongue for bitter tonics, an element sadly missing in so many modern diets (hence the large number of gall stones and even gall bladder removal surgeries).

Astringent herbs are another often missed element of any healthy lifestyle. Examples are Raspberry and Mullein, which act by drying and tightening damp of flaccid tissue. If the gut is in deep of moistening on the other hand herbs like Slippery Elm can be used every day to keep the mucosal membranes for the gut slip-sliding and happy. When things get a bit sticky down there a few days of psyllium in warm water between meals can get things moving along again naturally once again. Liquorice and Marshmallow can also be useful to lubricate and tonify the entire gut wall.

At Happy High Herbs Nimbin we believe that herbs teas can change your life. Using teas for health and wellbeing has never been easier. Check out our videos on making simple infusions and decoctions now……
